003: Hey, What's The Big Idea?
I had an episode about abstract and concrete design ready to post today, but all night I was thinking about what really drives me as a designer and why I love this industry. I spent the first episode telling you why design was important, but I felt like I left out the most important part. So I scrapped it and recorded this one.
We are living in the dawn of the Information Age and all that information needs people to present it. Each and every great idea that springs up on the Internet needs someone to make it happen. The dramatic shift in the last 20 years from selling goods to selling information and experiences has made the role of designer that much more important.
And to top it all off: even if you don’t end up being a full-time designer, you’ll still be a more valuable asset in any industry you find yourself in, because every product, every company, every place that’s in the business of coming up with good ideas needs people who can help them clearly and effectively communicate those ideas in creative ways.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Something that I find kind of surprising is that there is still such demand for web-savvy people. When I got involved in '95/'96 through the dotcom bust, this was all very vocal. While there is less "newness" to the whole web idea, there are *still* so many people, companies and organizations looking for help, feedback, ideas and participation in making themselves better on the web. I think you're right, the web's not going away anytime soon!
